Arguments in favor of a vegetarian diet
Health
Alexandra Sifferlin informed vegetarians lived longer because
they had low blood pressure, lower risk of cancer and heart disease. Paula
Martinac confirmed a vegetarian diet helped prevent digestive conditions,
heart disease, high blood pressure and even certain cancers.
However, Martinac warned that if you didn’t consume a balanced vegetarian
diet you might experience deficiencies. It is necessary to combine proteins,
for example, eating beans with brown rice.
Animal rights
An article in the BBC explained modern agriculture often violated
animal interests. For example: their right to live in natural conditions, to
enjoy a normal lifestyle in their habitats, to eat a natural diet and to be
free from fear and pain.
Moreover, Charles Eisenstein claimed that in order to feed modern
society’s enormous appetite for meat, animals endured unimaginable suffering in
conditions of extreme filth, crowding and confinement.
Ecology
John Vidal reported we humans ate about 230 tones of animals a year,
twice as 30 years ago. Down to earth website reported reasons why it was
green to go veggie: reduce CO2 and methane production, save large amounts of
water, avoid water pollution, reduce destructions of wildlife habitats and endangered
species, and reduce use of antibiotics, growth hormones and chemicals.
Economics
Lusk and Norwood confirmed that it was much more costly to produce energy
and protein from animal-based sources than from plant-based sources. Kathy
Freston said we fed 756 million tons of grain to farmed animals, if we fed
that grain to the 1.4 billion people living in abject poverty they would have
twice the food they needed to survive.
